Yep, I’m a Geek

Here’s the weird thing about moving in an instant from not-Dad to Dad:  everything imaginable changes.  Stuff you never thought would change about you, you realize a few weeks after the fact, has changed dramatically.  Like what?  Well, for lack of a better example, let’s take my laptop.  I’m on the laptop constantly, and if you see my on the subway, I’ve usually got the laptop in my messenger bag, ready to go as soon as I can get above ground and connect to wi-fi.

So in that long-ago time BB (Before Baby), or roughly 7 weeks and two days ago, my sweet laptop was rocking a favorite wallpaper shot:  a brilliant high-res picture of a 2010 Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S sitting perched magnificently at Brooklyn Bridge Park, with Manhattan in the background.  Two of my favorite things in one shot–the City, and one of the sexiest cars ever built.

And I was a happy man.

Flash forward to today.  I’m an even happier man–far, far happier, actually–but don’t be shocked when you open my laptop.  The Maserati, with its gleaming 20 inch Multi Trident aluminum alloy rims?  Gone.  In its place?  A shot of a ten day old baby, curled up asleep in a bowl that’s sitting sweetly in a field of clover. That’d be disturbing, of course, if she wasn’t my daughter.  (I hope people realize that when I open my laptop at Starbucks…)

But she is my daughter, and I’m in deep.  Things I used to think mattered–like one day owning a $135,000 sports sedan–somehow take a back seat to shopping for baby clothes.  I’m a regular now at stores like Giggle and Gap Baby, and no, my wife isn’t dragging me there.  I like it.

So I guess one of my daughter’s onesies really does tell the tale: My Dad’s a Geek.  Yup.  And proud of it.
