‘Tis the Season
It’s the MOST wonderful time of the year! Can’t you just smell it? The zeppoles…. sausage & peppers…fried oreos…just wafting in the Brooklyn air. Every year, this wonderful aroma guides me like some kind of cartoon character to the annual feast for Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I have been attending this feast since I was a kid. Now in its 123rd year, I am proud to carry on the tradition by bringing my own children…the third generation of Brooklynites. Not only do we look forward to the food, the games, our feet getting stuck to the ground from the overflowing frozen feast drinks, but the BEST part of this feast happens on Giglio Sunday. What’s that, you ask? Why, it’s only 125 men carrying a five-ton, five-story, hand-sculptured tower…ON. THEIR. SHOULDERS. Oh, and did I mention there is also a 12-piece Brass Band included on the platform of the tower? The men dance the tower through the streets while the band plays the Giglio Song as well as other Italian folk songs. It is really quite a sight to behold. If you haven’t been, make it a point to get there this year. It’s fun for the whole family. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast runs currently until July 18th. If you’re planning on going for Giglio Sunday, get there EARLY. The streets fill up quickly, but it is 100% worth it! For more information on the schedule of events, the history of the Giglio and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast, visit www.olmcfeast.com. And as they say in the good ole BKNY…Time to Feast!
Enjoy!

Hey Brooklyn Mama, you hit the nail right on the head! The best feast in the city hands down! Real Italian food, lots of fun and you can even take your kids to it without worrying they will be exposed to things they can’t handle! Great review!
