Dad’s Favorite Duds

photoSo, it probably goes without saying that as a Dad, I’m also a guy. And as a guy, I have certain items of clothing that, to put it mildly, I’m attached to–and which others may not see the appeal. (I took some heat a while back for a green zip-up sweater that my wife never quite fell for the way I did)

So along comes baby.

For a while there, I was really hoping that my daughter would find Daddy’s clothes as interesting as I find them. There was some encouraging staring for a while at the word “Brooklyn” on a favorite t-shirt. (And since she was designed and built in Brooklyn, I thought that was perfectly fitting–am I right, people?)

Adding to my belief early on that my daughter would be a huge fan of Daddy’s cool clothes–her little fingers are always grabbing for my shirts and baseball caps. I figured it had to be a sign of interest, right? When can I wear awesome stuff like this? Do they make this in my size? This ripped Italian soccer shirt would be so cool as a onesie!

And then I realized I was failing to see the forest for the trees.  You see, far more often than staring at letters or grabbing for the softly-folded bill of a beloved baseball cap, my daughter has been using my sweet duds as well-worn and Daddy-scented (yes, sometimes overly scented) burp cloths.

Case in point, today. Styling in a red and white ringer tee in honor of the Tour de France, I must admit I was feeling pretty good about myself.

That is, until my wife walked up smiling and pointed out the massive spitup oozing down my shoulder. (How, I continue to wonder, do I not immediately notice that this has happened?) And I realize that when my daughter smiles and gazes curiously at the interesting red design on my shirt, she’s really not thinking about how she can get a shirt just like it. She’s really just thinking better on that than on my kick-butt new pink kitty shirt.

The truly weird part? I was actually glad she didn’t get any on the kitty shirt. She looks really, really cute in it. And I’ve got a mess of t-shirts anyway.
