We didn’t give you the street number because we want you to enjoy the process of actually finding Claudio’s like we had to! Claudio’s Barber Shop has been a staple on 116th street since they opened the doors 60 years ago. The place is a bit of a time capsule and today Salerno-born Claudio Caponigro is one of the great characters of the neighborhood.
Now if the place looks familiar that’s because it about a dozen films have been shot here including Carlito’s Way, a Sports Illustrated swim suit shoot edition you might have seen as well a Jennifer Lopez music video that was in heavy rotation on MTV. But Claudio has seen his fair share of important clientele in the chair when Jimmy Durante and old time mobsters used to come in for a cut.
Claudio says he has seen the neighborhood change. Before it was known as El Barrio, it was Little Italy. 80,000 Italians lived in East Harlem in the 1930s. Amazing to think that back in the day 50 cents was all you’d pay and that included a shave. But Claudio’s is still a bargain! 10 bucks for a cut, but don’t bother calling ahead because the one thing Claudio still does not have is a telephone!
