And that’s how we discovered this small storefront some 20 miles east in Kent, where father daughter team John and Meagan are hard at work building their gelato empire, one outrageous and innovative flavor at a time. Sure, they sell them here, but have also strated a whole sale biz and are in over 30 restauratns across Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess and the Bronx and have their sights set on the entire Tri-State area!

ok, call me the last to know, but Queens is home to the oldest continuously operating farm in New York state, appropriately called The Queens County Farm! and you can go there! feed the sheep, take a hay ride, buy local eggs, honey and WINE! check out the cows and watch the peacocks sneak peaks of themselves in your hubcaps. AND IT IS FREE!!!!!

in celebration of everything green, we headed over that way with a motley crew of kids, and our buddy Alison Lowenstein – writer extraordinaire (City Kid New York, City Baby Brooklyn and a frequent contributor to Time Out NY Kids).

we also headed to her favorite post farm hang, Eddie’s Sweet Shop – an authentic old timey ice cream store on Metropolitan Ave in Forest Hills. banana split so big and messy it took 5 kids (and me!) to devour it – and everything is home made from rum raisin ice cream to decadent whipped cream and caramel.

so, check out the show tonight @ 9pm on NYC Life! you will also get to check out my new electric Chevy Volt. just plug ‘er in and gooooooo! say buy-bye to paying at the pump! being green was never this cool!

Ok, he is not technically known as “The Pie Guy” but that is how he was referenced when i got a hot tip from this awesome chick in my spin class. Hey, man, you never know where you’re going find the next big story.

If you have a serious passion for the baked good, then on your way back from Cold Spring, you have to save time for a stop at The Garrison Market because inside this little unassuming spot is where we found some of the best pies we have ever tried.

The man behind Tuttle’s Homemade is Dave Tuttle, a Croton local. After he lost his gig in TV, he took his love of pie to the next level. Not only is he passionate about sourcing locally, but also baking seasonally. Don’t ask Dave for a rhubarb pie in February or you are likely to get a small lesson is farming. What you should do is TRUST THE MAN. And when he tells you that the double-crusted sour cream apple pie is the one to try, JUST DO IT. And yes, The New York Times was correct when they said he makes the best pie in the Hudson Valley.

Relatively new to the cold spring retail scene is Go Go Pops, this bright and cheery spot offers up what many say is the perfect popsicle….in funky flavors like…lime mojito and honeydew lemongrass…based on Mexican Paleta’s which are big in brazil, Go Go Pops was founded by Lynn Miller and her husband Greg when he lost his job in the mass banking layoffs. They made them by hand and sold them at local farmers markets and customer demand was so strong that they opened up a shop in their hometown.
But Go Go doesn’t stop at the pop. They also sell a full lines of organic and fare trade and direct trade coffee and chocolate – which guarantees that the growers are paid are a fair and living wage for their product. Now kids and hikers alike come for the pops, but I spotted Lynn’s home made cupcakes like the grasshopper – rich fudge cake with peppermint frosting which looked as good as it tasted, And to get in the healthy spirit washed it down with a tropic thunder smoothie made with banana, pineapple, papaya, guava and coconut water. YUM!

ok, this is what goes down: they take a lump of spiced beef, cover it with mashed potatoes and drop it in the deep frier. i know it’s a latin dish, but c’mon it’s like a freakin’ deep fried shepherd’s pie, for crying out loud – minus the peas. after i shmeared it all over my body (TMI?) in ecstasy, i took a half a dozen to go. being that this is a family show, i will not tell you what i did with the rest of them. let’s just say they didn’t last long.

So, when I heard about a bakery in Jersey that stuffs its cupcakes with fillings like espresso mousse and amaretto cream, I knew we had to check it out. And we were not disappointed! I can’t even go in to all the flavors they have, you just need to check out their website. But I can say that these are, without a doubt, the most decadent, radical, over the top, craziest cupcakes we have ever encountered. The cupcake will never be the same for me. And the good news is that even if you don’t want to drive to Jersey, you can order them online…like Oprah does. The nice owners did however send me home with so many samples they barely fit in the trunk o the Traverse. I quickly unloaded at my son’s daycare out of sheer terror that I might actually eat every single last one. I ask…..how many spin classes would it take to burn off 36 stuffed (full cream) cupcakes?

From Their Website:

Since Maureen and Keith Jaret baked the first Stuffed Cupcakes in 2005, their unique flavor-filled treats have been a hit.

Keith graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and gained valuable experience at Windows on the World, La Mirabelle, La Petit Auberge and Mortimer’s Restaurant before taking the helm of Hilton International’s 180-seat Café 43. That’s where he met Maureen, a former Wall Street specialist turned epicurean after just one bite of Keith’s cooking.

Their love for each other (and quality food service) soon launched catering company A Savoire-Affaire. Their undying and well-fed entrepreneurial spirits kept going strong as they ran Latin-inspired restaurant and ballroom Restaurant Ole.

It’s this style that turns their creations into popular culinary delights.

They opened The Petite Café in Nutley, NJ. Cupcakes were first on their list of culinary experimentation. After serving-up breakfast, lunch and dinner, they would dedicate oven time to creating Stuffed Cupcakes.

For our season opener, we loaded up the crew in the Traverse because we got a seriously a hot tip: a factory in Jersey where chocolate is crafted. It is where Willie Wonka meets Sex and The City! Sexy hot chocolate, cabernet ganache, and dark chocolate bark with sea salt. Although, the factory is not open for private tours, you are still in luck because you can buy the stuff online!! Check out their website!
