When we put together out ‘weird’ episode we hit the Museum of Natural History to talk about Carl Ackley who was kind of the grand pooba of taxidermy. He created all of those incredible dioramas and the hall in which they stand was named in his honor. You have to admit, taxidermy is a little weird! But I can’t wait to take my kid to the butterfly exhibit!

If you are looking to increase your freak street cred, this is the place to go. Goth kids rock out in this shop. They may look kinda weird (fake fangs, etc) but so fun! They decked out Mark Joyella in wardrobe that would make Mystery jealous (oh c’mon you know you watched The Pick Up artist on VH-1!). Very steam punk indeed. But what was really weird is that Mark bought it all and showed up with goggles on his head at his next assignment. Your kids will love this place.

Have you ever had chitterlings? Do you even know what they are? Just a fancy word for pig intestines! Fried pig intestines! Let me say, I was not entirely enthused about this assignment but once we popped by Nyona which I was already familiar with when it was in its former less glam location across the street being that I love Malaysian food, I am now fan! But some how I had never ordered the intestines before! And much to my surprise, THEY WERE DELICIOUS! I even finished them when the camera stopped rolling! Plus the chef, from Malaysia was wearing a Yankee’s cap! I love New York!

This shop was started by a real life archeologist who digs up dinosaur bones in faraway lands as an homage to the Victorian era when collecting medical specimens was all the rage! if you are int eh market for an armadillo handbag, or a slug fossil, you have found the right place! The friendly shop manager Mike Duggan offered to show us how they “prepare” the animal skulls for sale: with flesh eating beetles, but we passed. Your kids will LOVE this place!

From their website:
“The World’s First and Only Osteological Store” was established in 1983, in New York, where it gained its initial fame. Today, having grown to incorporate all branches of the natural sciences, Maxilla & Mandible is a “World Renowned Natural History and Science Emporium”. In addition to our staff of paleontologists, entomologists, osteologists, anthropologists, sculptors and master craftsmen, we also employ outside experts in technical and scientific fields. Our celebrated showroom is just the tip of the iceberg -we have extensive laboratories, workshops and art studios which work in collaboration with our elaborate network of supply stations around the world. With a strong commitment to education, Maxilla & Mandible designs, creates, and constructs permanent and travelling museum exhibits. We are often called upon to appraise specimens and we are consultants to curators of both private and institutional natural history collections. Maxilla & Mandible has discovered many new and exciting fossil species and has donated these scientifically important specimens to museums. We have sponsored programs aimed at the reintroduction of insect species back into the wild and have helped finance research projects on biodiversity. Thus, our reputation and support is immense – museums, universities, and scientific and zoological organizations, have recognized Maxilla & Mandible as a powerful catalyst bridging the gap between the public and the scientific community.
